Best Care Practices for French Bulldogs

French Bulldogs are a beloved breed known for their unique personalities and adorable looks. They are playful, affectionate, and make great pets for families and individuals alike. Same with many other breeds-  French Bulldogs require proper care and maintenance to ensure they stay healthy and happy. In this blog post, we will explore some of the best care practices for French Bulldogs.

Diet and Nutrition

Diet and nutrition are critical to the health and well-being of any dog, and French Bulldogs are no exception. It's important to choose a high-quality dog food that is appropriate for your French Bulldog's age, size, and activity level. Look for a dog food that contains a balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates, as well as essential vitamins and minerals.

One thing to note - is that if your Frenchie is gassy - it's most likely the food they are eating! Our Frenchies do best with a limited ingredient food, specifically Lamb and Rice only. Foods containing lots of processed ingredients may be the root cause of poor digestion. If you do need to change your dogs food, please follow the standard guidelines and wean the new one in while weaning the old one out slowly.

This is also true of any treats you may give your Frenchie. Please make sure you are providing them with healthy treats or snacks. We prefer treats such as chopped sweet potatoes, frozen blueberries, and even carrots.

French Bulldogs are also prone to obesity, so it's important to monitor their food intake and ensure they are getting enough exercise. Avoid feeding them table scraps or human food, as this can lead to weight gain and other health issues.

Exercise and Activity

French Bulldogs require daily exercise and activity to keep them healthy and happy. Aim for at a very minimum 30 minutes of exercise per day. It's important to avoid overexerting your French Bulldog, especially in hot weather or if they are prone to breathing problems.

French Bulldogs also love to play and engage in mentally stimulating activities, such as puzzle toys and training sessions. This not only provides physical exercise but also helps to keep them mentally sharp and prevent boredom.

Lastly, they love to snuggle and just be in the same room with you. All 6 of ours are with us constantly and prefer to not be left alone.

Grooming and Hygiene

French Bulldogs have short, smooth coats that require minimal grooming. However, they do shed moderately, so it's important to brush them regularly to remove loose hair. Bathing your French Bulldog every three months or so is also recommended to keep their coat clean and healthy but to not over dry their skin.

French Bulldogs are also prone to skin allergies, so it's important to monitor their skin for any signs of irritation or inflammation (itchy paws, lots of scratching on their bellies, red or raw faces). Regular grooming can help prevent skin problems by removing dirt and debris that can irritate the skin.

It's also important to maintain your French Bulldog's dental hygiene by regularly brushing their teeth and providing dental chews or toys to help prevent plaque and tartar buildup.

Health and Wellness

French Bulldogs can have health issues just as any other breed, such as breathing problems, skin allergies, and/or joint problems. It's important to schedule regular veterinary checkups to monitor your French Bulldog's health and catch any health problems early.

Choosing a REPUTABLE and TRUSTED breeder who prioritizes the health and well-being of their dogs is so important to ensure that your French Bulldog is healthy from the start. Be sure to ask your breeder about any health issues that are common in the breed and how they ensure the health of their dogs.
